  If you are satisfied with the initial look and fit, go ahead and take the tags off and get ready to put on the wig. Before putting on your wig you want to consider wig security. There are several features and items that contribute to how well your wig will stay on when you wear it. Wig caps, whether they are nylon, bamboo, mesh or another material, can be a big part of wig security. They also help contain and protect your bio hair and can provide a layer of comfort between your head and scalp and the wig. Some wigs will come with combs and adjustable straps that can be Velcro, hook and eye, or a pulley system (similar to a bra strap). Many name brand wigs do not come with combs, as many are used for medical reason where combs would not be necessary or would be uncomfortable. In that case a wig grip is the way to go. Not all caps and wig grips are created equal, so I made videos talking more about wig caps as well as reviewing and comparing a variety of wig grips. Finally, you want consider wig placement. A common mistake for newer wig wearers is to place their wig too far forward or two far back. If you aren’t sure where your wig should be, check out the little trick I shared in the last blog. Remember, don’t be afraid to shift the wig around until you feel the wig looks and feels the best.

 STEP #4: HOW TO MAKE YOUR WIG LOOK NATURAL (AND WHAT YOU WILL NEED) This is the last step in your wig purchasing – and wearing – journey. For many, making your wig look as natural as possible and feeling comfortable and confident in it is an essential part. I shared a list of wig tools and products you are going to want to have on hand that will help your wig look as natural as possible. I have added additional deets to that list to help you better understand why they are important and how to use them. A wide toothed comb. Though I often use a wide tooth detangling brush, I suggest you stick to a wide tooth comb in the beginning. Wide tooth combs will help prolong the life of your wig and will not damage the wig fibers like some other combs and tools might. Dry shampoo. Sometimes you may get a wig that looks a bit shiny. Shine in bio hair is good – shine in a synthetic wig is not! Shiny wigs can look “fake” in a doll hair type of way. Using dry shampoo helps take that shine down. A wig spray. A detangling wig spray will also help prolong the life of your wig. There are many sprays available that are formulated specifically for synthetic wig fibers. Synthetic wig fibers are not porous like hair and therefore product build up will cause the fibers to break off and become brittle over time.

 Powder. I use a pressed powder foundation in the part and along the hairline of a lace front wig to make it look more natural and blend in with my skin. You can use most powders you have on hand although I prefer a pressed powder foundation as it seems to stick a bit longer than other powders.

 A wig head or wig stand. Wig stands or wig heads can help you keep your wig in good shape in between wears. It can also help you be ready to put it on and go when you are on the move. I love to use a wig head to style my wigs. I have several with wigs on them in various styles, in case I need to go somewhere at the last minute.

 Again, this isn’t an exhaustive list and doesn’t contain any heat-related tools or products, as some wigs are not heat-safe. These are the tools and products I recommend for those of you just starting out with wigs as there are tons out there to choose from. In the beginning – keep it simple! The more you learn about wigs and the more experience you gain, you will incorporate different and/or additional tools and products to your kit. Don’t waste money on things you may not use or want.

 COACH TIP: You may need to “mess with” or “play with” the wig a bit – especially if the wig has bangs and/or is a full cap. Don’t forget all the things you may already have or can purchase to style and accessorize your hair that can be used for wigs. Grab a cute headband, sparkly barrette, or a pretty hair scarf to take your wig to the next level. Wearing wigs should be fun, so don’t limit it to just putting it on as is. Grab a cute hat, add braids, or pin it up for a pretty or casual updo.

Getting Started Let’s start the step-by-step roadmap to help you decide which wig to purchase all the way to putting it on and wearing it out! Deciding to wear a wig, no matter what the reason, can be overwhelming. There’s so much to understand, know, and learn about wigs, it can be difficult to know where to start. You can definitely fall into the rabbit hole when trying to find wig information and you will continue to learn more and more as you progress through your wig journey. Still, knowing the basics of where to start can make that journey easier, more enjoyable, and save you precious time and money. Step #1: Choosing Your Wig There are several questions you will need to ask yourself to narrow down the immense wig selection that’s available. I have a basic video exploring these questions, as well as one where I go more in depth, but let’s get started exploring what you want and need now. Grab a piece of paper or open your notes app and answer the following questions for yourself.

  What is the price range you are willing to spend on a wig? Do you want synthetic fibers, heat-friendly, human hair, or do you have no preference? Do you have the time and/or the desire to style a wig or would you prefer a more “put on and go” option? What are your preferences when it comes to hair style, texture, length, and color? What is your comfort level with not only putting on a wig, but also wearing it out in public? Depending on how you answer these questions, it will determine what type of wig you are looking for. Don’t worry if you aren’t quite sure how to answer each question or change your mind as you move through the process. Step #2: Purchasing Your Wig Now that you have some idea what type and style of wig you would like, it’s time to choose a style and purchase it. Before you click “add to cart”, there’s one more important step you need to do…measure your head. There’s nothing worse than receiving your wig, only to discover it doesn’t fit properly. A wig that’s too tight can be very uncomfortable and even cause headaches. A wig that’s too big can be difficult to secure and can fit in a way that is unflattering and even annoying!

 Now that you know what style you want and have chosen the perfect color, it’s time to add it to your cart, right? Not quite yet. There’s one additional step that I think can be very valuable to your purchasing decision…check out reviews! Looking up reviews and videos on the wig you are interested in can help you ensure you are choosing the best wig for you. How a wig looks online versus how it looks on you can be very different. Watching videos on the wig you plan to buy can save you time, answer additional questions, and help you feel confident in your purchase.  Ok, so now you are ready to purchase the wig! Don’t forget to review the shipping information as well as review the return and exchange policies. If you receive your wig and aren’t sure you want to keep it, these policies will be very important. Step #3: What to Do When Your Wig Arrives Yay! Your wig has arrived! Now what? First things first, take your wig out of the box - but don’t remove the tag yet. If you determine this wig isn’t for you, it will need to have the tags attached to be able to return or exchange it. Time to try on the wig and see how it looks! First, shake out the wig a bit. This will help loosen the fibers and bring the style to life. Take your four fingers and place them on your forehead starting at your eyebrows or brow bone. This should give you a good starting point for wig placement.Don’t be afraid to shift the wig around until you feel the wig looks and feels the best.

 So, you have decided this is the wig for you. You have also put on the wig and it feels secure – so that’s it right? Not quite. Making your wig look as natural as possible is an important part of wearing wigs for many people. There are various tips and tricks to achieving a more natural-looking wig, but in order to achieve a natural look there are a few tools and products you are going to want to have on hand.  Hand-Tied Construction The hand-tied wig cap can be constructed using two methods. Method 1: The ENTIRE cap, meaning the front, sides, and back (as opposed to just a specific section) is constructed by manually hand tying individual hair fibers to the mesh base. This is called 100% hand tied. Method 2: Only a SECTION of the cap, such as the top is hand-tied, and the rest of the cap is machine wefted. This method allows your natural skin tone to show through, giving the look of natural hair growing from your scalp. The hand-tied construction imitates the natural movement of real hair. It is considered to be a softer, more comfortable cap, and is also lightweight and well ventilated, which is great for someone with a more sensitive scalp or hair loss. Lace Front Construction Lace front wig caps are made using a virtually sheer lace material along the front hairline and are designed to create a natural looking front hairline so the hair can be styled away from your face or even pulled back. The lace can extend from temple to temple, and also ear to ear, depending on the manufacturer. Each hair is individually hand-tied to the sheer lace, creating the illusion of natural looking hair. For this reason, the lace front wig is often referenced as the wig with an “invisible hairline”. This feature is sometimes combined with a monofilament top 100% hand-tied base, which can be a costlier option. Exclusively By The Wig Company

 There are two types of wig caps that are made exclusively by The Wig Company. The Sleep Wig and the Soft Stretch Wig. Both wigs caps are designed specifically with comfort and durability in mind. Other ear tab designs do not have the same ability to aid in comfort or in fit. Soft Stretch Nape – Gently and securely hugs and conforms to your neckline. The standard nape on all other wig caps is not designed with the stretchability to conform to the back of the neck.

  Soft Stretch Circumference Bands – A softer fabric with a 2 1/2 times wider band that eases tension between the ears and the nape. All other wig cap designs are made with a thinner, not as soft fabric, and will in some cause uncomfortable depression lines in the area between the ears and the nape. Soft Flex Combs - Tiny, flexible, weightless combs for added security. The Soft Stretch wig cap design incorporates three flexible combs sewn to the inside of the wig cap, one at the front and one at each side of the wig cap. These combs slide easily through your hair for added security. Soft Weave Wefting – Generally in most wig designs wefts are sewn in straight rows from left to right, this type of wefting limits the flow of thestyling of the fiber. In Soft Stretch the wefts are sewn in a wavy pattern. This technique offers a cooler cap design and allows more air flow to your scalp for better fiber movement and more styling versatility. Life Life Fiber - A TWC exclusive from Kanekalon featuring ultra-light denier fiber strands combined with traditional fiber, resulting in more coverage and volume, and a wi that is 25% lighter in weight. You probably have some questions about selecting your perfect piece, so we’ve provided this comprehensive guide with tips for beginners to walk you through the process step by step. Below you will find tips and basic wig information written by our experts. Choosing your size Ensuring you get the most comfort from wearing a wig we always recommend you take a few quick measurements at home. First you’ll want to determine which size hairpiece is the best fit for you. There are four sizes: The ultra petite is the smallest, and fits heads from 19 to 20 inches in circumference The petite cap is slightly larger, for heads measuring 20 to 21 inches. The average cap is considered “one size fits most,” and some wigs will be available in this size only. This cap is for heads between 21 and 22 ½ inches.

  The large cap fits heads from 22 ½ inches up to 24 inches. In order to determine your ideal size, you’ll need to measure your head. This can be easily accomplished by using a tailor’s tape measure, found at most grocery or drug stores. Place the end of the tape measure at your front hairline Move the tape around your head, and over your left ear Go around the nape of your neck, or back hairline Move the tape around the right side, over your ear, and up front again This number will tell you your head’s circumference. However, when purchasing a custom-made piece, you’ll need to take two additional measurements One from left ear to right ear, over the top of your head The second from front hairline to back hairline Whichever of these three measurements is the largest, that’s your size!   Part your hair down the middle, creating two distinct sections as if you were styling for pigtails. You’ll always want to part your hair to contain it and keep it from popping out. Pull each section tightly toward the back of your neck until they cross over to opposite sides. Pin the ends of each at the side hairline. Place the wig cap over your head and adjust as needed. If you have short hair: Brush your hair back and smooth it down under the wig cap. Place the wig cap over your head and adjust as needed. For additional support and security some customers use double-sided tape or adhesive, which can be found on our website in the accessories section. Sometimes all you need is to adjust the tension of the straps on the back of your cap. Cap Construction There are five types of wig caps, each with their own unique features. Standard

  The standard cap is the heaviest and most durable, with a closed flower net lace top and open wefting on the sides. The layers of hair are machine-sewn to the cap, which is made from a cotton-based material.

  This piece has a set, pre-designed style and the crown is often lightly teased or crimped so you can’t see through to the cap. This gives the wearer a natural lift at the crown and creates volume. What is a Capless Wig The capless wig is the most common and affordable. The open wefting in the crown, back, and sides provides excellent ventilation. This cap is lighter and cooler than the standard design. While you may ask "how to wear a capless wig" rest assured they go onto your head the same way a normal topper would.. However with lighter weight and more breathability. Monofilament The monofilament cap is constructed using a thin, breathable nylon or polyester mesh material at the crown, giving the illusion of scalp/skin. This model assumes the wearer’s natural scalp color by partially revealing the scalp below, offering the most natural look. With a monofilament piece, you will have a large variety of styling options because each hair is individually hand-tied at the crown, so the hair can be parted and brushed in any direction. Hand Tied The hand-tied cap was specifically designed for people experiencing hair loss. It maximizes comfort, especially for the sensitive scalp. Each hair is hand-tied to the cap, which is made from a mesh-based material. This cap is the most ventilated and lightest weight model.
